Shijūni no monoarasoi
Imprint:
[The 42 contests], late-Muromachi/early-Edo period
Description:
This "Yonjūni No Monoarasoi" is an example of large fukurotoji book now in the Keio Library collection. There was a traditional rule when they illustrated Waka poet (since Heian period, 12th century). We call it Kasen-e (歌仙絵) and they drew Waka poet as if they are sitting on tatami (畳)—mattress made by plant called Igusa—and drew them all from the same horizontal perspective.
