Starting from the 16th century, it became common to insert illustrations in book-style formats, such as Fukurotoji. "Gio" is a illustrated tale of female tragedy (considered as a part of 13th century Heike Monogatari). Bound in horizontal fukurotoji (yokohon) format, this book is slightly larger (25.6 x 18.5 cm ) comparing with other illustrated books.
